Ioana Stelea (born 1988, Romania) graduated in Glass Art at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. After obtaining her MA, she worked in the same department as an assistant professor. During her PhD studies she obtained an Erasmus Scholarship in Czech Republic, where she worked with several master engravers. In 2019 she got her PhD in visual arts with a research about conservation of immaterial heritage of glass engraving and methods of reintroducing ancient engraving techniques in contemporary artistic approaches.
Ioana is active as an artist, researcher, curator and teacher of glass art and engraving. She has had solo exhibitions and participated in important national and international group shows. Her work can be found in public collections in Romania and abroad.
In her artistic practice she has developed methods to use glass engraving in contemporary ways, giving a new perspective to this old and precious technique by taking it from its traditional status and including it in installation and performance art. Her work approaches themes in connection with personal or collective memories and experiences which are later transposed into glass as an inventory of objects and things that she used or seen, giving them an ephemeral and uncertain status.
